Happy New Year! One evening in Zurich, after a late night cake run, we decided that our iPhone app, Google Mobile App with Voice Search, could do with a little bling. The result of this is a few extra options hidden below the preferences on the Settings tab. Trust us, they're down there... it just might take some perseverance to get to the bottom of things. Just keep trying!Does blue not go with your new belt? Use the Theme Color to style [...]

The final two hours of 2008 were, for me, the most fraught and tense of any New Years Eve that I remember. A central London car journey that was scheduled to take only 15 minutes became a 2 hour long trauma. We made it to the restaurant 90 minutes late, just one minute before the gongs of Big Ben would ring in 2009.On paper, the plans for the evening looked clear enough. My mum is staying a few days with us, [...]

People on Twitter participated yesterday afternoon by starting their tweets with "@IsraelConsulate," and officials responded as best they could (in theory) within the 140 character limit. Going through logs of yesterday's "Citizen Press Conference" reveals the consulate handling questions from supporters and rather aggressive detractors with equally dissatisfying answers. TIME reports on iStanford, which launched October 1, enabling users to access a campus map and course catalog, email professors and get news and information about sports teams. But the newest version, slated to arrive shortly, also allows students to add and drop courses, see the real-time whereabouts of the on-campus shuttle bus, review their own grades and course history and perform a variety of other administrative tasks that are normally accessible only over secure campus networks. That's because, in an [...]

Photo: New Year's fireworks over Tbilisi, Georgia by vshioshvili Some Rights Reserved In spite of so-so results with my 2008 predictions, I back to try again. 2009 will be a year of significant changes in the mobile world. The current global recession will have a profound negative effect on all industries. Fortunately, mobile will be affected less than most. Users may cut back on mobile spending but they won't give up their phones and startups will continue to innovate in [...]

Crowd control at President-elect Barack Obama's January 20 inauguration ceremony will present quite a challenge: On top of the 240,000 ticketed guests who will descend upon the National Mall that day, millions more are expected to join. Ten thousand charter buses will converge on the Washington area. Metro riders have been warned to be prepared "to stand in close proximity to several thousand people." To manage all of those people, inauguration organizers are turning to text messaging and Twitter. cnet [...]

Micro-blogging service, Twitter is one of the big successes of Web 2.0 in terms of mine share and number of users, if not profits. The simple open social network, where content is limited to 140 character status messages, now has over five million users. The 140 character limit comes from Twitter's origins as an SMS service, but Twitter's elimination of SMS updates in most of the world doesn't seem to have slowed Twitter down. Most Twitter people (Tweeps?) seem to be [...]
